Apple Bourbon French Toast Casserole ingredients
Makes 6 servings1/2 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 Tbsp bourbon
3 large baking apples, cored, peeled and sliced (or diced)
6 slices day-old bread, sliced thick
1 cup milk
1 Tbsp vanilla extract
1.5 tsp cinnamon
1 dash nutmeg
Increase brown sugar to 1.5 cups and use 2 cups coarsely chopped toasted pecans instead of the apples. For a kick, add 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper.
Notes: If you're preparing the casserole the morning you are serving it, dip bread slices in egg mixture before putting them in the pan. Pour remaining egg mixture over the top of bread slices; then bake at 350ºF for 40 to 45 minutes.
DirectionsIn a small saucepan, melt butter and sugar; whisk to combine and cook until slightly thickened.
Add bourbon; whisk again and cook about 1 minute more.
Pour butter mixture into 9- x 13-inch pan; arrange apple slices over and cover with single layer of the bread slices.
In a large mixing bowl, beat together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg; pour over bread.
Cover dish and refrigerate overnight. (For same-day preparation, see Notes: above.)
The next morning, place casserole dish in the oven and heat to 350ºF. Bake until apple slices have softened and bread is golden brown, about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
